Cross Country teams improve at Regionals

Fontbonne University sophomore Todd Schulte (St. Francis Borgia HS, Washington, MO) broke his own school 8000 meter record at last Saturday’s NCAA Division III Regional Meet held in Oshkosh, WI. Schulte’s time of 26:39 on the five mile course broke his own previous school best mark by 3 seconds.
The Griffin’s average team time on Saturday of 27:03 surpasses the individual record time heading into this season of 27:04. Fontbonne head coach Dave Almany said he is pleased with the result and optimistic about the future.
“That is quite an improvement and testifies to our team depth. We are headed in the right direction,” Almany said.
Saturday’s average time was 36 seconds faster than last year’s time at the Regional Meet. Sophomore Ethan Blakley (Bryant HS, Little Rock, AR) was the next across the line for the Griffins in a time of 26:54, a mark that places 4th on the Fontbonne All-Time Record Board. Junior Zack Kassman (Northwest High School, Cedar Hill, MO) was the next to finish for Fontbonne. His time of 27:08 ranks 6th on the Record Board.
“The times were fast,” commented Almany, “but I still felt we could have run better. Our average time has improved over 2 minutes from two years ago, so we are getting better and reaffirms for us that we just need to keep on doing what we are doing.”
The Griffin Women ran without their three time First Team All-SLIAC performer Rachel Hanson (Rossview HS, Clarksville, TN), who was sidelined with a bout of strep throat.
“I was really proud of how our women responded without Rachel,” said Almany. “Even without her, and she has been our number 1 finisher in every race for three years, our average time was 9 seconds faster than last year.”
Leading the way for the Lady Griffins was Kaitlin Titsworth (Breese Mater Dei HS, Bresse, IL) in a personal record time of 25:06. The sophomore’s performance was good for a 6th place ranking on the school 6000 meter honor roll. Freshman Erica Garcia (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, IL) followed up a first team all conference showing from two weeks ago, to break the 26 minute barrier, finishing the course in a time of 25:59.
“Our women are definitely going to be a program to be reckoned with the next several years,” said Almany. “I really like the mix we have right now. We have good leadership in the sophomore and junior class and a very talented group of freshman. If we land the caliber of recruits we think we can for next year, then our women are in line for a break out year.”
Almany said he’s enjoyed working with the men and women squads this year.
“They all got along well and really supported each other. Both the men and the women’s squads were `teams’ in the truest sense of the word. The season just flew by and we are excited about the upcoming indoor and outdoor track seasons. With everyone back for next year, we expect to continue to improve as a program,” concluded Almany.
