Men's cross county eyes third straight SLIAC title

Aug. 23, 2010 - For the first time since the program was revived four years ago, the Fontbonne University men’s cross country program will look for leadership from a solid group of juniors and seniors for a successful 2010 season.
Fontbonne University senior Zack Kassman, a three-time St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) First Team All-Conference selection, will attempt to lead the men’s team to their third straight SLIAC championship. The men’s team returns several players who were part of the 2008 and 2009 SLIAC championships.
The Griffins return juniors Mike Horn (Vianney HS, Kirkwood, MO) and Ian Lindquist (St. Mary's HS, St. Louis, MO), both who were All-Conference performers their freshman and sophomore year. Fontbonne will also welcome back junior Everett Jackson (University City HS, University City, MO) who sat out last season after taking 5th and 2nd place at the conference meet as a freshman and sophomore. Jackson is also a former SLIAC Newcomer of the Year.
Fontbonne will also look to returners Dillon Klaffer (Cape Notre Dame HS, Kelso, MO), Bill Boxdorfer (St. Mary's, St. Louis, MO), John Agusti (St.Mary's HS, St. Louis, MO), Shea Naes (Fox HS, Arnold, MO) and Donnivan Aikens (Parkway North HS, St. Louis, MO) to make contributions this year.
Fontbonne University head men’s and women’s cross country coach Dave Almany has added a strong and deep recruiting class that will provide depth in the program. This class includes two Missouri All-State selections that will join the squad for fall workouts.
Austin Duncan (Osage HS, Lake of the Ozarks, MO) and Daniel Newberry (Van Buren HS, Van Buren, MO) bring impressive running resumes from their high school days and will push for top seven spots, Coach Almany said. He said Newberry was a multiple sport athlete in high school, while Duncan comes from a solid high school program with a philosophy very similar to Fontbonne's.
Freshman Joel Linquist (St. Mary's HS, St. Louis, MO) is a former state qualifier while Tyler Poole (Northwest HS, Grand Island, NB) returns to running after a four-year stint in the Air Force. Poole had a stellar high school running career in Nebraska. Brad Soble (Brighton HS, Rochester, NY) will be an incoming sophomore transfer who ran some very good races as a high school student. He is also a former national age group champion speed skater.
Fontbonne opens the season on Saturday, Sept. 4th in the Forest Park Early Bird Meet.
