Track records fall at Fred Wilt Invitational Meet

The Fontbonne University Track and Field squads made a major effort to salvage what has been a shortened indoor season by performing in record setting fashion at Saturday’s Fred Wilt Invitational Meet in Anderson, Indiana.

Four school records fell on Saturday starting with senior Monica Engelbrecht (Dow HS, Midland, MI), who set a new school record in the 1000 meter run finishing fifth in a time of 3:37.1.

Sophomore Todd Schulte (St. Francis Borgia HS, Washington, MO) shattered the previous indoor record in the 5000 meter run by over 11 seconds. Schulte posted an outstanding time of 16:01, good for 6th place. Sophomore Mike Horn (Vianney HS, Kirkwood, MO) shaved over 5 seconds from his personal record time, breaking Everett Jackson’s previous school mark in the mile by over three seconds, turning in a blazing time of 4:37, good for a fourth place finish.

The day’s most dramatic improvement was the 1600 meter performance of sophomore Kaitlin Titsworth (Mater Dei HS, Breese, IL), who improved her time by a whopping 15 seconds from the previous week. Titsworth crossed the finish line in 5:45.68, earning her 4th place in a talented field of runners.

“We had several other outstanding performances that didn’t break records. I was very pleased with how our kids bucked up and competed,” said head coach Dave Almany.

The Fred Wilt Meet is considered one of the strongest Division III meets in the nation, and the fact that the Griffins were not only able to hold their own, but defeat some of the top runners in the Midwest was, according to Almany, a pleasant surprise.

“Our athletes showed a real tenacity on Saturday. I seriously considered in the middle of the week canceling the meet because we have not had the quality practice time this winter that we need and I didn’t know if we could compete against such a strong field,” Almany said. ”I was afraid we would be in over our heads at Anderson. I totally misjudged our kid’s competitiveness. It was a very satisfying meet for all in our program.”

The Griffins, with the exception of one or two athletes who will compete in a “Last Chance” meet this coming weekend, have completed the indoor portion of their schedule. The Outdoor season will begin March 20 with a meet in Terre Haute, IN.
