Men's lacrosse loses 2012 opener

Feb. 21, 2012 - The Fontbonne Univesity men's lacrosse team dropped their 2012 season opener this weekend to Sewanee Univeristy 13-10. The Griffins fall to 0-1 this season.

With the score tied 6-6 at halftime, Sewanee scored four of the first five goals in the third quarter to take a 10-7. Fontbonne scored the final goal of the third quarter to cut the lead to 10-8 but the Griffins couldn't get any closer.

Junior Peter Travis scored the Griffins first goal of the season midway through the first quarter to give Fontbonne an early 1-0 lead. After Sewanee tied the score a couple minutes later, Fontbonne responded by scoring the next two goals to give them a 3-1 lead with 1:41 to go in the first quarter. Senior Camerin Staffel and freshman Marcus Seale recorded the Griffins' goals. Sewanee however scored two goals in the final 1:23 of the first quarter for a 3-3 tie.

 After the teams traded goals to open the second quarter, Fontbonne scored two unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead with 5:46 to go in the half. Sewanee however end the quarter by scoring two goals in the final 2:41 to tie it at 6-6 at halftime.

The teams once agained traded goals in the opening moments of the third quarter but Sewanee then scored three goals in four minutes to take a 10-7 lead with with 6:41 to go in the third quarter. Travis' third goal of the game cut Sewanee's lead to 10-8 at the end of the third quarter.

Sewanee put the game away by scoring two goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter giving them a 12-8 lead with 13:27 to go in the game. Fontbonne's Seale and Travis scored late goals but not enough to complete the comeback.

For the game, Travis led the Griffins with four goals and one assist. Seale recorded three points on three goals while Staffel had a goal and an assist. Colin Benecke and Tucker Nichols tallied a goal each while Adam Walker recorded an assist. Fontbonne sophomore Thomas Carroll recorded 15 saves in the cage for the Griffins.

Fontbonne will return to action this weekend with two games in Texas. The Griffins play University of Dallas on Friday and Southwestern on Sunday.
