The Fontbonne University women's lacrosse program’s first year of competition was the 2006-07 school year. Fontbonne was one of the first schools in the Midwest to offer a NCAA sanctioned women's lacrosse program and the first to offer women’s lacrosse at any NCAA level in Missouri. The team is a member of the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference.

The Griffins travel all over the United States during season play. Past spring break trips have included California, Oregon, Colorado, and Dallas. Fontbonne played as an independent team for the first four years before joining the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC). The Griffins first year of MWLC play was in 2011.

The Griffins practice and play their games at newly renovated Centene Stadium in Clayton, Missouri. Centene Stadium features such facilities as a new synthetic field turf, bleachers capable of seating 1,200 spectators, a press box, new rubberized track and lights.
