Softball gears up for a new season

Feb. 6th, 2012 - After a successful 2011 campaign that included a conference championship, a conference tournament championship and a return trip to the NCAA Div. III National Tournament, the Fontbonne University women's softball team brings back a quality group of contributors and five new members that are going to provide immediate impact on the upcoming season.
Fontbonne's success starts in the circle where they bring backs starting pitchers Kourtney VonBehren and Rachel McCarthy, who are both returning off strong seasons. Samantha Rosner will again be behind the plate guiding them in her 4th season. Having an experienced battery that knows each other well should provide big dividends for the Griffins this season.
Defensively, Fontbonne returns both middle infielders; 3rd team All-American shortstop Marissa Simon and All-Region 2nd baseman Cara Hargate. They will again turn people’s heads on both sides of the ball.
Both corner positions are open after departures from Amy Simon and Amanda Beaver. To fill those shoes, Fontbonne expects to see Danni Glixman and Cassi Glixman putting their mark on Griffin softball as freshmen. Callie Dennis, a transfer, is also going to see some time at first and brings some experience to a young group. Hitting gets players in the lineup and Callie has a very strong bat. Fontbonne also have two freshmen, Jessie Pratt and Alexis Stankovich, who are extremely versatile and are battling for time at all positions, even pitching. They bring outstanding flexibility to the program and will make an impact for the team this season.
In the outfield, Fontbonne returns Alyssa Akers who has quietly gone about a fine career. Also in the outfield is Sarah Cerutti who broke her hand last season but was on pace to make a huge mark in the stat book. New to the program is freshman Shannon Fitzpatrick. Shannon is a true outfielder that brings exceptional defense and great speed, which will keep her battling for a spot in the lineup.
Fontbonne hopes to continue to put pressure on the defense by stealing bases, 126 last season. Hit/run and run/hit is what head coach Bill Rosner's wants his opponents wondering at all times.
Coach Rosner is excited to add a new chapter to Griffin softball.
"A new season comes with new goals and our conference is our number one priority again. The preparation to defend our title is big for us, Coach Rosner said. "We want to make a repeat appearance at the National tourney, but we are taking it one game at a time and not overlooking any opponent. Our strategy is the same; pitch and receive well, play good defense and get timely hitting. With those key components I think we'll be tough this season."
