Softball wins SLIAC Tournament; earns NCAA Tournament bid

The Fontbonne University softball team defeated Webster University tonight 7-3 to earn the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III National Tournament. This will be the Griffins first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 2006 season.

After falling behind early 3-1, Fontbonne (24-15) battled back by losing the long ball. The Griffins got two home runs from junior thirdbaseman Amy Simon and one home run from sophomore firstbaseman Amanda Beaver. Fontbonne junior pitcher Brittany Kirn threw six-plus scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. Fontbonne, the #2 seed, defeated top-seeded Webster twice in the tournament.

Simon earned SLIAC Tournament MVP honors while freshman pitcher Kourtney VonBehren, sophomore catcher Samantha Rosner and Kirn earned All-Tournament honors.

Fontbonne will find out who their next opponent is on Monday when the NCAA releases its Regional pairings.
