2004 class

Monica Jackson-Standford (Women's Basketball/Women's Soccer)

Monica Jackson-Stanford is a 1998 graduate of Fontbonne University with a major in Business.  She was a two-sport athlete who excelled in both basketball and soccer.  Monica transferred to Fontbonne in her junior year having attended Florissant Valley Community College as a freshman and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside as a sophomore.  She is a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy High School.

Monica holds several  basketball statistical records of note.  These include most points for a single season, 467; most field goals for a single season, 191; and most rebounds for a single season, 289.  These were achieved during the 97-98 season.  During that year, she averaged 18.7 points per game.  Monica was a SLIAC All-Conference selection both of her years of play.

“Monica was a fierce competitor with the belief that the sole reason to compete was to win," said her Fontbonne basketball coach Keith Quigley.  "At 6’2, her physical size was an intimidating factor, but her desire to compete and her sheer determination to succeed are what separated her from all the other athletes.”

Coach Quigley equates Monica’s influence as one of the reasons Fontbonne began its dominance of the conference in women’s basketball. Monica also excelled as a goalie on the women's soccer team.

Monica’s ‘life after college’ has been an exciting one.  She enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1999 and is stationed at Hurlburt Field Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach Florida.  She worked as an Aircrew Life Support Technician for the MH-53 Pave Low Rescue Helicopters. In her free time Monica plays basketball with the women’s base team and was selected in the top ten out of forty air force women all over the world to represent the All Air force Women’s Basketball team. During Monica’s two years her team captured bronze and silver medals in the tournament. In 1999 Monica elected to change her MOS to the medical field. She attended four months of pharmacy training. Following the September 11th tragedy, Monica was deployed to Afghanistan.

SHERI MASSMAN-RICHARDSON

Sheri Massman is a 1996 graduate of Fontbonne University.  She has a Masters in Social Work from Washington University.  Sheri came to Fontbonne in 1995 to play women’s soccer after playing two years at Florissant Valley Community College.

In her first year at Fontbonne, Sheri was selected as the Newcomer of the Year in the SLIAC, and was named to the First Team All-Conference.  In her second year, Sheri was again named to the First Team All-Conference, and led the Lady Griffins to the best year in soccer in school history.

During that 1996 campaign, the Lady Griffins went 15-3-3 and won the SLIAC Tournament Championship.  During her two years at Fontbonne, Sheri played a defensive position that did not net her a lot of statistics.  However, her skills, tackling ability, and knowledge of the game were evident by her team’s success and her selection to the all-conference teams.  Sheri was a team leader that anchored a defense that led the Lady Griffins to their only conference championship to date.

KATHERINE HERNAN (Women's Basketball/Field Hockey)

Katherine Hernan is a 1943 graduate of Fontbonne University with a major in Economics.  Katherine played varsity basketball and varsity field hockey for four years.  She was an enthusiastic and energetic player who exemplified school spirit.  Katherine tells us that back in the 40’s, when she was playing, record keeping and statistics on individuals was not done.  Nor, she said did they have the benefit of a trainer, leading many of the girls to just ‘play with pain’ as they competed in their sport.

Katherine was an all-around student-athlete who participated in all facets of university life.  She was secretary of the Fontbonne Athletic Association in 1941 and 1943, and served as vice-president in 1942.  She was also treasurer of the Fontbonne Social Peace Club in 1943.
